(Updated on )
This is my little story on why I use the Omron digital blood pressure monitor to keep on top of my blood pressure.
I just turned 40 last year and I had a feeling that my blood pressure was high. I have two young sons, one 8 with a disibility and the other 5 who pushes me to the limits with his lovely cheeky personality.
So at times I can be very stressed to say the least and turning 40 didn't help either.

One night I started going very red and hot and I had a terrible pressure in the top of my head and behind my eyes. I knew immediately that it was my blood pressure so I made an appointment for the doctors the next day.
When I went to the doctor he took my blood pressure and it was through the roof. So much so, he couldn't let me go home. He made me wait outside his room for a further 20 minutes and he took it again. It had went down but was still high.
He prescribed me some high blood pressure tablets and told me to make an appointment to get my bloods took in a weeks time and to see him in two weeks time.
The next day I took the tablet and lay on my bed for some rest. My husband was looking after the boys downstairs. Within 10-15 minutes of taking the tablet I honestly thought I was having a stroke!
I got a numb tingly feeling all over my jaw, neck, right shoulder and upper right arm. I was so scared. I shouted for Sean and told him I thought I was having a stroke and I needed to go to hospital straight away.
We dropped the boys off at my mams and went straight to accident and emergency. I was seen within 10 minutes and whisked off to a ward, a hospital gown was put on me and they then give me an ECG.
A chest exray followed and then a lot of lying in bed waiting for doctors and consultants to see me.
Fast forward a few hours and my blood pressure had lowered and the tingling sensation had gone. They came to the conclusion that I had an allergic reaction to the high blood pressure tablet and I had been put on too strong a dose for the first time (10mg).
They sent me home with another packet of the tablet but only at 2.5mg. The next day I took the tablet, but it still made me feel ill.
I then decided that I would stop taking the tablets (I hated the idea of being on tablets for the rest of my life anyway - especially since I am only 40!) and try and get my blood pressure down with a change of diet.
My New Diet
I needed to lose a stone or so anyway so now was a great time to start. I bascially have cut out bread and rice and I eat very small amounts of pasta and potato.
I eat as much vegetables as I can and try to spice them up a bit with spices and herbs. A mild vegetable curry is a favourite of mine.
I drink at least 1 litre of water a day, sometimes more and I only have two cups of coffee at the most each day.
I have also introduced a green drink into my daily diet which is green grass. It doesn't taste good but the benefits are worth it (after you've finished reading here, do a search for 'wheat grass benefits' and 'green drink').
I go to the gym 3 times a week and only drink red wine on a weekend.
The Omron Digital Blood Pressure Monitor
By this time I hadn't taken any high blood pressure tables for weeks and I hadn't gone back to the doctors to test my blood pressure either.
Concerned, my husband went ontline and bought an Omron digital blood pressure monitor to see how I was doing (and to see how he fared up too!)
To my amazement, I was only slightly over the norm and I was more than happy with that.
I continue my diet and exercises and I try to drink more 'green drink' because it is so good for me. I constantly monitor my blood pressure with the Omron monitor and this has helped me keep away from the doctors and keep me off lifetime medication.
However, I will say this to you. If you are like me and like to test your own blood pressure and if you find it constantly high, then please go to the doctor. There is no substitute. High blood pressure is a silent killer.
If I find mine going back up again, then I will go back to the doctors and go on those bloomin tablets. I have to, I have two little boys to think of!
It's really great to keep in touch with your blood pressure levels with the Omron Digital Blood Pressure Monitor even if it's inbetween doctors appointments.
Please feel free to leave a comment or your personal experience with high blood pressure.
All the best!
Claire
